Dancer's Corner: Russian Exotic

What is Russian Exotic Pole? It’s a double down on exotic pole which explores pole’s sexier side. It is closer to the craft of strippers/exotic dancers. Hence the name “exotic” pole. It’s sensual and artistic. Its signature is flowing floor work, heels and explicit sexual movement.

Now take that and add soviet grit to the mix and you have Russian Exotic Pole - pole dance you just can’t look away from. It adds a little extra sauce to an already steamy performance. While it might seem like a simple delineation, there is much more to it than that.

It Really is a Fusion

Think of all the Olypmic sports Russians are notoriously good at. Ballet, figure skating, gymnastics, twerk videos.  All of these elements show up in this style of exotic dance. It blends elements from various dance forms (i.e. ballet, contemporary dance, strip plastic, etc.) and adds in acrobatic and athletic elements.

For instance, a choreography that would include intricate floor movements and graceful flows gets paired with techniques like splits, flips, kicks, and dynamic transitions.

It Amplifies the Music

This style is ultra in tune with the music. A performance is paired typically with Russian (obviously)  popular music, including rock, hip hop, and pop, but here’s the catch. All of the music has something distinct about it whether it be a beat, synth, or a snappy tempo - this makes for a very deliberate elemental pairing of movement to auditory cue.

For instance, a choreography might be paired with an absolutely melt-your-face off house beat, and the dancer will seem to dissolve into the music. Conversely, perhaps the music features BIG hip hop beats - often you’ll see a body roll, kick, handspring or flip to emphasize the generosity of the drop.

Side bar - the music doesn’t have to be Russian, it’s just typical to the style.

It’s Not Edgy, Its Raw

It’s a technically demanding style, requiring strength, flexibility, and coordination. If you’ve ever seen a choreo then you know how infused with expression, grit, attitude and sex appeal this form can be.

Have we intrigued you? You’re in luck! The studio is hosting a Russian Exotic CAMP on Saturday,  April 5th. Sign-up here!
